Recipe from Cory Grinaker.

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. molasses
  • 2 Tbsp vinegar
  • 5 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 tsp soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp cloves (ground)

Cream shortening with sugar. Add egg, molasses, and vinegar (see note); beat well. Sift dry ingredients; stir in. Chill 3 hours. Roll thin on lightly floured surface. Cut in shapes. Place 1 inch apart on greased cookie sheet. If desired, sprinkle with sugar (we used colored sugar as you know). Bake in moderate oven (375ºF) 5-6 minutes. Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet. Cool on rack. Makes 8 dozen medium cookies.

Note: I did the dry ingredients first and added a little at a time to "wet" mixture)
